Update on Cornwall's New Special School

Bosvena School is Cornwall’s newest special school for children and young people with Social Emotional and Mental Health needs. It is an integral part of The Special Partnership Trust and the local community, serving families across Cornwall.

At capacity the school will provide places for 65 pupils who will have struggled to access or successfully participate in mainstream provision, as their needs have acted as a barrier to their interactions with others and their engagement in learning. The school will provide a flexible and therapeutic environment alongside a unique tailor-made curriculum which will support pupils in overcoming barriers to learning, leading to improved academic, social and emotional outcomes. The children who attend the school will have an Education Health and Care plan and be placed by Cornwall Council.

The ambition of Bosvena school is to transform the life opportunities of young people with SEMH difficulties who may have had disrupted educational opportunities, by providing pupils with the support they need to learn, thrive and succeed in their education and potentially re-integrate back into mainstream provision.

The school is being developed in partnership between the Special Partnership Trust, Cornwall Council and the Department for Education. The contractor for the project is Bowmer & Kirkland and the project delivery partner is Mace. The design and layout of the school are in the later stages of being agreed and the project is approaching the formal planning phase. A full planning submission is anticipated in September for the proposed site, which is near Bodmin.

Subject to planning approval, it is anticipated that work will start on site in April 2023 with a target opening date for the school of May 2024. The Trust is continuing to develop a network of stakeholders and development partners for the school and anticipates that stakeholder groups, which will be active in shaping the school offer, will become formalised early in 2023.
